    Shi hyong Kim / Fanfare for Baby (2003)
    I wrote this work for my baby who will be born soon. While writing this work, I felt being happy.

    Shi hyong Kim (b.1972) graduated from the college of music, Seoul National University with Prof. Seung-jun Choi, Sukhi Kang. He got the master and doctorate degree of music in composition, at the Academy of music in Krakow with Prof. Marek Stachowski. He took a prize from the Dong-a Music Competition, the Contemporary Music Society Competition and the Seoul Music Festival. His works has been performed in Korea and abroad.
    Currently, he has been teaching at Seoul National University and several universities in Korea. As an active composer, he is a member of Contemporary Music Society, Composer's Alliance of New Music, Korean section of ISCM and ACL.

    Yoko Oba Fanfare / Toward the Light (2003)
    The light calls light, goes toward the light, and then begets new light...

    Yoko Oba graduated from the graduate school of Tokyo University. She won the 1st prize and Yasta award, and was selected for the 4th Tokyo International Chamber Music Competition in Composition. Currently she is devoted herself to compose music with her unique musical language

    .Wonsook Lee / Tanzische Fanfare fur Blaserquintett (2003)
    Tanzische Fanfare is a fanfare for dancing. In this piece, dancing means western dance such as bolero, which consists of simple motivic rhythms making various beats of dance through non-metrical rhythmic variations.

    Wonsook Lee studied composition at Seoul National University and Staatliche Musikhochschule
    Heidelberg-Mannheim in Germany. She lectures at several universities such as Seoul Nationl University and Suwon University

    Shigenobu Nakamura / Music for the Theater for Brass Quintet (1994)
    Music theater is an important pillar of my work. Music theater is musical piece in which a performer's gestures are adopted as a component of music. Gestures are as important as sound in music theater.
    Music for the Theater is music theater that doesn't include any gestures. The sound used in this work makes us imagine various gestures, which are the work's components. These gestures, however, don't have any concrete meanings. They only have abstract musical meanings.
    This work consists of 10 sections. The character of each part is mutually different. The gesture assumed from the sound characterize each section. The gestures such as "Walk slowly by the tramp," "Run as having gone mad," "Halt rapidly," "Jump down from a high place," "Pause lonesomely," "Walk like the sleepwalking person," "Stand up with unintentional," and "Fly up to the sky" will be assumed in this piece.

    Nakamura (b. 1950 in Osaka) composes various music ranging from contemporary music to music for television dramas and events. He has written more than 100 compositions in various genres, including 10 orchestral pieces and three symphonies.
    Since the late 1980's, he has enthusiastically produced and presented music theater works using computers, and some of his music theater piecese using computers were accepted and presented at the ICMC in 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997 and at ZKM in 1998
    Recently he has also produced visual works, which were accepted and presented at International Award for Video Art (Germany) in 1995 and 1996, "l;immagine leggera" Palermo INternational Videoart Film and Media Festival (Italy) in 1997, and ICMC in 2001. In 1997 and 1998 he was artist-in-residence at the ZKM Institute for Music and Acoustics.
    He is presently professor in the Department of Acoustic Design at Kyushu Institute of Design in Kyushu University.

    Hitomi Kaneko / ESPACE/VISION for Horn and Trumpet (1996)
    This piece was written inspired by the Japanese traditional No-theater's piece entitled "Futari-Shizuka" (meaning "a couple of women named Shizuka"). At the scene of the No-stage a ghost of Shizuka-gozen ("gozen“ was an honoris causa to a person who is of a high social level, in old times) appears, and possesses to a young lady named also Shizuka who is nipping rape blossoms. They are in a similar dressed, and dance nesting mutually. It loos like one Shizuka is a shadow of another one. [N.B.: Shizuka-gozen was one of the most tragic heroines in a historical novel at the end of 12th century in Japan (i.e.: the Kamakura era), and was a sweetheart of Yoshitsune who was a younger brother of the then a 'shogun' Yoritomo.]
    In this piece, a staged horn and a shadowy trumpet which is placed backward inthe seats of the audiences are mutually performing, and their sounds wrap the whole space of the concert hall. Sometimes, a shadow disappears overlapping with a reality, otherwise it appears accompanying with a tiny difference between the shadow and reality, and in the latter case, the existence of the shadow is more realistic than the reality. It is the interest of contrasts between the reality and its shadow.
    In general, the trumpet might be a gay star within orchestras and/or ensembles, but in this time it was dared put as a 'shadowy existence,' because I prefer to draw out the other fascinations of this instrument.

    Hitomi Kaneko (b. Tokyo, 1965) studied composition at Toho Gaukuen School of Music in Tokyo and then at the Paris Conservatory with a French government scholarship. In France she produced her works for computer at IRCAM.
    Awarded first prize in the Competition of French-Japanese Contemporary Composition, as well as first prize and E. Nakamich Prize for the orchestral composition in the 59th Japan Music Competition, and others.
    Kaneko's pieces had been performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Contrechamps, Orchestre de Canne, Ensemble 2e2m, Ensembel Musica Viva Hannover, etc... and were broadcasted by France Musique, BBC, NHK, and so on.
    Regarding her own musical language, she had written and made public some important treatises. On the other side, recently, she has been organizing the annual concert-series together with the foremost composers and players of our time, adn is the one of the most interesting activities in Japan. She is at present a full-time professor of composition class at Toho Gakuen School of Music.

    Humio Tamura / Intersection-Parallel Song for Zephyros (2003)
    "Intersection" symbolizes physical, functional, and structural characters of this music that a certain sound(pitch) is specified by the combinations of three bulbs and the length of slide, and that there are two layers(higher and lower) and functional points in the middle register that verifies the characters of elements which originally belonged to each layer, while 'Double Song' explains that two groups of sound(songs) are getting subdivided into the grammatically unrecognizable semiotic mess, and fragments of symbols are reconstructed as a new song again.

    Humio Tamura received his M.A. in composition at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music with Jo Condo, and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London with Robert Saxton, where he was granted the fellowship under the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists from 1995 to 1997. His pieces have been performed at several music festivals such as the Spitalfields Music Festival in London, Asian Composers League Festival, All Japan Band Festival, Tokyo-no-Natsu Music Festival, and ISCM Hong Kong.
    He has won prizes including the Valentio Bucchi International Composition Competition in Rome, the JACA Award for Theater Arts, the National Theatre Award, and Honorable commendation on Genesis Prize for Opera 2002.
    He is a member of the Japan Federation for Composers, Tempus Novum, the Japan Electronic Music Society, Ensemble Contemporary a, and Promusica Nipponia and is currently teaching at Kobe University.

    Changwon Park / Spur... 2003 for Brass Quintet (2003)
    Spur consists of seven little pieces of components. Each component has a different motivic movements, which represent acoustic vestiges of brass quintet in various spaces. The last parts of the components vanish with the resonating sounding of vestiges of micro-tones.

    Changwon Park graduated from Yonsei University (B.A), Mannheim-Heidelberg Musikhochschule(K.A) and Karlsruhe Musikhochschule(K.E), studying composition with Chanhae Lee, Inyong La, P.M Braun, U. Leyendecker, W. Rihm and Heiner Goebbels. In 1989, he won the Jung-Ang Competition, and Yonsei Cultur Award in 1990.
    His works have been performed at Tongyoung and Daegu Contemporary Music Festival, ACL in Korea and the 21st Century Music Society and etc... Currently, he is teaching at Yonsei University and also a music director & conductor of the Contemporary Music Ensemble SORI.

    Pascal Dusapin / Stanze pour quintette de cuivres, 1st.mov. (1993)

    Commissioned by the Ensemble InterContemporain. First performance by the Quintette de cuivres de l'Ensemble InterContemporain.

    Pascal Dusapin (b. May 29, 1955, Nancy) studied arts and aesthetic and plastic arts and sciences at the Sorbonne. His interest in music was heightened by his attendance at seminars given by Iannis Xenakis from 1974-78.
    He is the recipient of many awards, including a prize from the Vocation Foundation (1977) and the Prix Herve Dujardin from SACEM (1979) and earned a scholarship to stay at Villa Medici in Rome (1981-83).
    More recent awards include the Prize of the Critics Association (1993), a season as composer-in-residence with l'Orchestre National de Lyon (1993-94), the Prix Symphonique from SACEM (1994), and the Grand Prix National de Musique from the French Ministry of Culture (1995). In 1998, he earned the Victoire de la Musique (which enabled his works to be recorded by l'Orchestre National de Lyon) and his Watt was the selected work at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers in Paris.

    Jin-Soo Kim / Sae-ya Sae-ya (Birds Birds) for Brass Quintet (2003)

    This piece is based on the Korean folk song, 'Sae ya, Saeya' (Birds, Birds) with the contemporary harmony by the inspiration or the various birds' gestures and sounds. Also, this piece has a contrast an individual in the static gesture with the flight in the movie of Alfred Hitchcok, Birds.

    Dr. Kim graduated from the College of Music, Seoul National University in 1992 where he studied music degree composition and conducting .In 1996 he got the mater of music degree in composition at Peabody Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Dr. Robert Hall Lewis and Dr. Bruno Amato. He got his Ph.D. degree in music composition from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2001. He studied with Dr. Daniel A. Weymouth, Daria Semegen and Sheila Silver. He took a prize the 18th Chung-Ang Music Competition in Seoul, Korea, "Relation" for string quartet and his piece "Reflection" for woodwind quintet won a prize at the 1st Moldova international Composition Competition, Republic of Moldova, in 1993. His orchestral work, "Gui-Chun" was performed by Korean Symphony Orchestra at the Seoul Arts Center in 2001 and Pusan Philharmonic in 2003. As an active composer, he is a member of Contemporary Music Society in Seoul, the composers Group 'Ji-Eum' and Korean section of ISCM. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at Kon-kuk University.

    Luciano Berio / Call pour quintette de cuivres (1985)

    Dedicated to Nashville Brass Quintet.

    Luciano Berio was born in Oneglia, Italy. After studies with Ghedini at the Milan Conservatory, he worked for the Italian Broadcasting Corporation from 1953 until 1960, when he founded the Studio di Fonologia and directed a concert series under its name. He has taught in America at Tanglewood, Mills College and Harvard University, and in Europe at Darmstadt and Dartington; from 1965 to 1971 he was a member of the composition faculty of the Juilliard School in New York. He ran the electro-acoustic department of IRCAM in Paris until 1980; in 1981 he founded tempo Reale, an institute for new music, in Florence. In 1988 he became an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, London. He has also been awarded the prestigious Siemens Prize.

    Takmi Ikeda / Bells, fanfare (2003)
    The title of this tune means a part of brass instruments and/or one of percussion instruments. The notion is very simple. I had an image of "change ringing" of bell tower. "Ringing" is used on unique method of melody, but this tues was wrtten by different method which resemble "Ringing."

    Takmi Ikeda was born near Tokyo in 1975 and graduated from Tamagawa University in 1998. In 2001 he stated his musical activities and participated in the 6th Wangsan International Culture Art Festival in Korea. He makes electro-acoustic works and also post-classical instrumental works, and collaborates with dancers, visual artists and musicians.

    Chung Hyun-sue / Fanfare & Fragment (2003)
    Welcoming the Japanese Brass Quintet to the PAN Music Festival 2003, this piece is written for two trumpets and one trombone. The opening creates the space of the fanfare atmosphere with echoes, and it gets filled by melody of a wholetone scale as the episode follows.

    Hyun-Sue Chung was born in Jinhae, Korea. She received B.Mus. and M.Mus in composition from the College of Music, Seoul National University, having studied with Kyung-Hwa Lee and Byung-Dong Paik. She completed her Ph.D degree in composition at King's College, University of London under the supervision of Sir Harrison Birtwistle, and her works were performed at Royal Academy of Music, Cheltenham Festival, King's College Great Hall Concert and Foyer Concert in Royal Festival Hall. She is an adjunct professor in the Composition Department at Chugye University for the Arts and teaches at Kookmin University, Dankook University and Seoul National University. She is also an active member of ISCM Korean section, ACL Korean section, the Korean Society of Women Composers, and the Society of Contemporary Music UNJI.

    Takashi Fujii / Danching Bones for trombone solo (1999)
    Needless to say, the sounds produced by an excellent musician are enchanting. However, what is also convincing about his performance is the inevitability of his body movements as he plays. This inevitability may be as perceptible in a motionless posture as in a unique and eccentric motion. The body's movements and subtle and ever-changing expressions are like music in that they cannot be expressed in words. They convey a powerful message and indicate an image and urge that reside in the depths of one's spirit.
    The body cannot be deceived. It is unmanageable by nature In the modern age, we have come to put our faith moe and more on the powers of the reason. However, the body achieves an understanding that surpasses that of the reason and invites us to the depths of our being.
    It is a sad heritage of our times and a total mistake to inerpret music as mere "soudns." Music is not limited to a strictly scientific and physical reality. Like any other cultural phenomena, it penetrates and interacts with numerous other fields, existing in what we might call "social sympathetic vibration." While the human body constantly serves as the connection between the self and society, the spirit and nature, its self-expression is rich in metaphor.
    What, though, if the music is created not by the sound but by the movements of the body?
    Dancing Bones: the metaphysics of the human body.
    The words uttered during the music's performance are names of human bones.

    Takashi Fujii was born in Osake, Japan in 1959. He graduated from Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo, and studied with E. Nunes at the Musik Hochschule Freiburg in Germany. His works habe been performed and broadcasted in many cities in Japan, Europe, and Asia. He received a commission to perform in Darmstadt Summer Course in 1994. He won Fukui Harp Music Special Award in 1994 and Asahi Composition Award in 1995. He has given many creative music workshops with handicapped people since 1992. He is a member of ISCM Japan and teaches at Kunitachi College of Music and Seitoku University.

    Toshiya Watanabe / Fanfare (2003)

    I treated the horn as a soloistic instrument and that is calling to the other instruments.

    Toshiya Watanabe was born in 1974 in Tokyo. He was graduated from Composition Department of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, completed the graduate school of the same university. In his academic year, he received the Ataka Prize. He received the 3rd prize of Tory Takemitsu Composition Award in 1999, Encouragement Award of the 22nd Japan Symphony Promotion Foundation, the honorable mentions of the 24th Irino Prize, and was selected for Takefu Award 2003. He took park in the Takefu International Composition Workshop as a invited composer. Next year, he was invited to Royaumont Composition Seminar in France. His pieces were performed by Klangforum Wien, Nieuw Ensemble, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and Contemporary Music Ensemble Tokyo COmeT

    Yong Ju Lee / Korean Fanfare (2003)
    The gradually getting faster tempo and rising melody make exhilarating climax, which can be felt by Wheemori and Jajinmori in Korean traditional folk musics. In this piece, these folk musical phenomena are expressed concisely.

    Yong-Ju Lee graduated Seoul National University of Music College, where he studied composition and he continued to study composition at Staatliche Musikhochschule Freiburg in Germamy. He won several prizes from the German Radio Broadcasting, Cultural Department of Siemens and the 4th Nachwuchsform founded by Musik Texte. His music was introduced by the radio program of Franktrut and Bremen. Currently, he gives lectures at several universities incuding Seoul National University.

    Sachiyo Tsurumi / KINGAKU - imperfect product - Concerto (2003)
    Sachiyo Tsurumi was born in 1976 and receivedher BA in musical composition from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1999. She participated in the International Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam and was given the Honorble Mention in 2000. She has been challenging to break the traditions and pursue her own way to present musics.

    Seung Jae Chung / Delayed Illusion for Brass Quintet (2003)
    The main idea of the piece is to simulate a delay effect without electronic devises but with brass instruments.

    Seung Jae Chung received bachelor’s degree at Seoul National University, and master’s and doctoral degree at Manhattan School of Music. He studied with Chung‐Gil Kim, Giampaolo Bracali, Nils Vegeland, and Richard Danielpour. His music was performed during Gaudeamus Music Festival in 1996. Mr. Chung served as a director of electronic music studio at Manhattan School of Music and taught electronic music courses from 1998 to 2000. Currently he is a member of ACL, Contemporary Music Society in Seoul, the composers Group Ji‐Eum and Korean section of ISCM. He is teaching at Seoul National University, Korea National University of Art, and etc.
